Mt. Caglago in Caramoan [My World-Tuesday]

Rio de Janeiro has Christ the Redeemer, Caramoan has Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary, or popularly known as the Mother of Peace. The 26-foot Marian image is the biggest in the Philippines and located at the peak Mt. Caglago in Barangay Tabgon, Caramoan town in Camarines Sur. To reach the grotto, you need to climb a flight of 527 breathtaking steps. Resting after every 5 steps is allowed.:p

The original statue was constructed in 1989 and completed in 1990, but it was damaged by a super-typhoon in 1998, then struck by lightning the next year. Attempts at restoring the statue were not successful so the church commissioned a new sculpture and it was finished in May 2008. The presence of this statue has drawn Catholic pilgrims to Mt. Caglago. A Mass is celebrated here every first Sunday of the month, and in 2000 the Shrine was declared as one of the pilgrimage sites in Camarines Sur.

The image is lighted at night to guide the fishermen back to the shores of Tabgon.

How to get to Caramoan: If you are not afraid to fly, there are flights from Manila to Naga City. It's about an hour flight. You can also take a 10-hour bus ride from Manila to Naga via South Luzon Expressway. You will pass through the provinces of Laguna, Batangas, Quezon and Camarines Norte. From Naga City, it takes approximately 2 hours to reach Sabang, where the port is located. Boat ride to Caramoan from Sabang normally takes about 2 hours. Disembark at the Guijalo port in Caramoan and take a tricycle (local transportation) to your chosen accommodation.

Thanks for showing this! I have been to Rio and seen Corcovado, and your statue is very reminiscent of it. What beautiful surroundings and a perfect perch.

This is a beauty tucked all the way. I have not even heard of this statue. What a great comparison to Rio's Redeemer. We can put this place in the map.

What a beautiful statue. Considering the view from the base of the statue, I think the climb up those steps would be worth it.
