Sky-watching: On the road

Driving in Manila can drive you crazy.  But instead of getting impatient at the slow moving traffic, look at the bright side.  Here, I had more time to enjoy the dusky skies while on the road.:p

Brake/Preno [LP]

@ mirandablue

The brake lights are the most important lighted warning system on your vehicle. It warns other drivers of  your intention to slow down or stop.  Defective or malfunctioning brake lights are dangerous and could cause accidents.

@ mirandablue
For Thursday 2 Questions - you are invited to answer and join:

1.  How often do you check your vehicle's lighting system?
  • I have to admit that I don't check my lighting system regularly.  But once I notice a malfunction, I'm having it fixed it right away.
2.  What are the road irritants that annoy you?
  • I have a long list of annoying road irritants---last-minute braking tops my list.  This is the most common habit of jeepney drivers.  Tailgaiting makes me nervous, lane-hogging and failing to use signal lights are definitely annoying.

On the road [Photo Hunt]

@ mirandablue
The dirt road to Kapurpurawan rock formations in Ilocos Norte---a three-kilometer unpaved road that led us to the rugged coast of Burgos, and the amazing sight of the white rock formations.

We were on the road for about 4 hours from the city of Vigan, and we were ecstatic when we finally reached this bridge.  A few minutes from our final destination---the white beaches of Pagudpud.

License Plate [Photo Hunt]

@ mirandablue
Planes don't have license plates but they do have international registration numbers painted on the tail. This unique alphanumeric combination is never repeated.  So I suppose, this is like a license plate.:p

Below is the current license plate for private vehicles---a combination of green-coded 6 alphanumeric symbols on a white background.  On newer vehicles, the first letter usually indicates the region where vehicle is registered.  The earliest license plates were introduced around 1912.

Nichols Interchange [Sunday Bridges]

@ mirandablue
Slow moving traffic at the Nichols Interchange, located at the intersection of Sales Road and South Luzon Expressway.  The multi-level flyovers at this interchange were constructed to ensure smooth traffic to and from the new terminal of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

Guadalupe MRT Bridge [Sunday Bridges]

@ mirandablue
The Guadalupe MRT (or Metro Rail Transit) railroad bridge through my windshield.  I took these photos while crossing the Guadalupe Bridge at EDSA.  The steel-framed arch railway bridge is for MRT-3, or Blue Line that operates in EDSA.  MRT-3 has 13 stations along its 16.95-kilometer track.  The Guadalupe Bridge, on the other hand, is one of the 13 bridges that crosses the historic Pasig River.

This is going south to Makati City on Saturday afternoon.

Rockwell flyover [Sunday Bridges]

@ mirandablue
It's not your computer screen, it's my dirty windshield.  The frequent drizzles combined with dust and fumes make for a grimy windshield.  I took these photos through my windshield in a slow-moving traffic at EDSA on Saturday afternoon.  This is going south to Makati City at the approach of the Rockwell flyover.  The Rockwell Center is a former thermal plant site that was converted into an upscale high-rise residential apartments, offices and a shopping mall.

Market! Market! flyover [Sunday Bridges]

@ mirandablue
One of the methods implemented by the government to curb the high volume of vehicles in the streets of Metro Manila during peak-hours is the Number Coding Scheme.  Vehicles are prohibited in the streets for a certain day in a week, specifically on Mondays, vehicles with plate numbers ending in 1 and 2 are not allowed from 7 am to 7 pm; 3 and 4 on Tuesdays, 5 and 6 on Wednesdays and so on until Friday.   I had an appointment one Friday afternoon early this month and my car wasn't allowed to be in the streets that day.  So I took a cab and had the chance to take some photos along the way.  This is one of the flyovers along C5 Road that connects traffic to Bonifacio Global City, an upscale business and residential area.  The cab driver gave me some curious glances when he noticed I was taking photos.:p

Three bridges and a lizard

@ mirandablue
There are three bridges here and a lizard about to jump off the bridge!

I'm kidding about the lizard, of course.  I didn't notice it until it crawled across my windshield.  Poor little thing.  As for the bridges, these three are at the intersection of Ortigas Avenue and C5 Road, a 19.7-kilometer beltway which stretches from Taguig City to Quezon City in Metro Manila.  I was on Ortigas Avenue going east, on my way home on a late Saturday afternoon...traffic flow was slow as usual.

The Ortigas Avenue interchange is one-way from the east going west to EDSA, north and south to C5 Road---my usual route when going to work.  The skyway is a two-way bridge along C5 that crosses over the Ortigas Avenue interchange.

Ayala Avenue flyover [Sunday Bridges]

@ mirandablue
This is Monday morning traffic as I was approaching the Ayala Avenue tunnel going to Roxas Boulevard.  Above the tunnel is the Ayala Avenue and EDSA intersection, on top is the drab Ayala flyover.  Also seen is the footbridge crossing EDSA.  Ayala Avenue is one of the busiest thoroughfares in Metro Manila, crossing through the heart of Makati's central business district.  Because of the many businesses located on the avenue, Ayala Avenue is nicknamed the Wall Street of the Philippines.  When the MRT (Metro Rail Transit) was constructed, the flyover was added for left turners to EDSA.

Tricycle [My World-Tuesday]

In remote areas like Caramoan [where this photo was taken], in  town  and city streets where buses and jeepneys are not allowed to operate, tricycles are the most common means of transportation.   A tricycle is a motorcycle with a sidecar (a passenger cabin)---a local taxi-service with three wheels that will drop you off  at your exact destination.  Tricycles are commonly seen in inner roads, often for short distances.   It fits into alleys and smaller streets, dirt roads, and even in places where there are no recognizable pathways.  Fare is seven pesos (or about 15 cents) per person.  But if you're in a hurry and don't want to wait for other passengers to fill up the tricycle, you need to pay for the maximum capacity, and it's called a "special trip".

LP: Disiplina [discipline]

I am one of those who applauds the "no siren" policy of the new president.  Everyday, we experience and witness the slow-moving traffic in Metro Manila.  Like most civilized people, we would patiently wait for the vehicles ahead of us to move.  Then suddenly a car behind you would rudely overtake, intimidating drivers by using  blinkers and an infernal police siren to flaunt their position and power over ordinary motorists.  At those instances, I would wish I have superpowers to blast those siren-blaring a--holes to Uranus so we would never hear from them again.  I fervently hope traffic enforcers would fearlessly implement the law against sirens and blinkers to discipline those who shamelessly display arrogance on the road.

Above is my usual route to work every morning.  The photo below was taken on Saturday afternoon at the C5-Eastwood overpass.

Fast cars [Photo-Hunt]

vintage Porsche 356

I am not a racing enthusiast nor a vintage car connoisseur but I admire sleek sports cars when I see one. We stumbled upon this array of Porsches at the Fort Strip after dinner on Saturday night. Their presence alone produced monstrous amounts of horse power there's no doubt of their powerful and fast presence on the road. The iconic red vintage Porsche 356, a highly regarded collector car, is obviously much loved and well maintained.

Litratong Pinoy: Alam mo ba? (Did you know?)

Like any motorist, I'm on the road almost everyday---going to and from the office, around Metro Manila and its neighboring provinces, I've witnessed funny, irritating and sometimes sad scenes on the streets. So today, I'm sharing photos I've taken while on the road.

People say that Manila has one of the most chaotic traffic in the world. One of the reasons perhaps is the behavior of Filipino drivers and pedestrians. If you're a Filipino, surely, you know what I'm talking about.

We have drivers here who don't know how to read road signs, who blatantly disregard traffic laws, and angry drivers who think they own the road. You could try to honk at the wacko, but he wouldn't hear even a fire truck siren---his radio is blasted at full volume. And behind you at a traffic jam is some weirdo who honks every 3 seconds, yells expletives every 5 seconds, and honks at accelerates at the pedestrian lane. And bumping into a friend while driving (not to be taken literally) is a delightful occasion. Don't be surprised when a jeepney in front of you comes to a sudden stop in the middle of the street---the jeepney driver chats with his buddy in another jeepney. And what about you, and the ten to twenty vehicles behind you? Well, you all can wait while the long, lost friends are catching up. These drivers are related to a fearless pedestrian who crosses a 4-lane highway, jumps out of a bus while the bus is still moving, and runs across an intersection even after the light turns green. This pedestrian has either a latent death wish, or thinks Ped Xing was a Chinese emperor.

Did you know that Ped Xing along Roxas Boulevard is not a famous Chinese with a street named in his honor? I've seen Ped Xing street signs in Hong Kong and America, and I thought, "Wow, this guy's everywhere! He must be really famous!" I assumed Ped Xing was some brilliant Chinese philosopher, perhaps Confucius' classmate or Lao Tze's mahjong partner. I was dumbfounded when I learned, not too long ago, that Ped Xing is an abbreviation for "Pedestrian Crossing". Yes, it was an absolutely jaw-dropping, humbling moment.:D

So, let's cross Ped Xing when we get there...

Ruby Tuesday: Ducati red

I would have passed this display without giving it much thought. But you know how boys are with their toys---the friend I was with couldn't resist admiring this "work of art" (his words) displayed at the Podium. A red Ducati Superbike named Alice that probably costs more than I earn in a year.

I admire sleek engineering but truth be told, I am not particularly fond of motorbikes. I get absolutely paranoid when I'm driving and there's a motorbike nearby. I worry that one of these things would happen: a handlebar would scratch the paint off my car, or I would unwittingly send the motorbike flying to the air, breaking the rider's neck, or worse, cracking his skull. Most riders here are reckless, don't follow traffic rules, and always in a hurry. So don't blame me if unlike my friend, I did not drool on this superbike.
