River Shrimps on the rocks

I'm back after a 2-week hiatus. Missing my blog buddies and catching up with what's happening in the blogosphere.

Here's my comeback post to tease your tastebuds---river shrimps (swahe) on the rocks. This dish was cooked before my eyes. Fresh shrimps are thrown into a hotbed of rocks and covered for a few minutes. The waiter shakes the pot here and there, and---voila!--cooked shrimps on the spot. Smells good, too! It's actually steamed shrimps (halabos) prepared in a creative way.

I enjoyed this experience at Mesa-Filipino Moderne, The Terraces branch in Ayala-Cebu.

Baked Scallops

Scrumptious baked scallops with garlic butter from Mesa-Filipino Moderne at Greenbelt 5. One of my favorite appetizers---the flavors burst in my mouth. The mouth-watering rich aroma of garlic and butter was delightful, and I felt positively lightheaded (not from hunger) after biting on the first scallop. But if you're counting calories, this is definitely NOT for you. This serving has 370 calories which you could burn by 49 minutes of jogging, or driving a truck including loading and unloading for 52 minutes. And that's only for an appetizer!:p

Tinapa with a twist

Our humble tinapa (smoked fish) has finally arrived! A bit surprised when I read tinapa in the menu---what's tinapa doing in a "high-end" resto? But check out these crisp tinapa rolls wrapped in fresh lettuce leaf and served with spicy vinegar dip, each bite was divine! This appetizer totally changed my mind about tinapa, I even ordered tinapa rice. Tinapa overload--and it was all delicious!

Recommended by a friend, I was curious at the hype (Ate Shawie and other celebs promoted this restaurant), tried it and now I understand. Mesa-Filipino Moderne at Greenbelt 5 serves Filipino dishes with a twist, the authentic flavor is there, but the presentation is entirely different. Took an American boss there last week, and he was quite impressed...especially with the River Shrimps (Suahe) on the Rocks. Fresh shrimps were loaded in an earthen pot containing hot rocks---shrimps sizzled and voila---they're cooked before your eyes, a creative way of preparing halabos (steamed shrimps). I'll take a photo next time, promise.:p
