Caramoan - Matukad Island [Watery & Outdoor Wednesday]

My recent trip to Caramoan is something that I wouldn't forget in a long time. The rugged, natural beauty of this peninsula is like nothing I've seen before. Matukad Island was the second islet we visited on Black Saturday, and it made quite an impression. Nobody lives in Matukad, and it has a short stretch of powdery white sand beach with turquoise water, limestone rock formations and flourishing vegetation. This islet is a favorite island-hopping destination at the Caramoan Peninsula. If you want to stretch your legs, doing a bit of island exploration would reveal a hidden lake behind the jagged rock formations. To see the lake, we had to climb the scraggy rocks. For someone like me who never tried rock-climbing before, the experience was both scary and exhilarating.

Sinakulo in Caramoan [Ruby Tuesday and My World-Tuesday]

As a predominantly Catholic nation, sinakulo or passion play is performed across the Philippines during Holy Week. Every community, in rural and urban areas, has their own version of sinakulo and some even have actual crucifixions. Aside from being a religious tradition, the sinakulo is said to be the root of the conventional Filipino melodrama. The Virgin Mary became the "all-suffering, all-forgiving Filipino mother" and Jesus was the "savior of societies under threat and the redeemer of all those who have gone wrong".

I witnessed this passion play at Tabgon, in Caramoan, Camarines Sur on Good Friday. Red signifies passion and therefore, the color of the day.

Caramoan: Island-hopping [OWM]

Spent the Holy Week holiday in Caramoan, a remote town in Camarines Sur. I posted some photos in Facebook and 95% of my friends don't know where Caramoan is. Very little is known about this place until recently when Survivor France shot the entire 8th season in some of the deserted islands of the peninsula. 


From the port in Sabang, it takes about 2 hours by outrigger boat and approximately 70 kilometers of mountains and rugged coastline to reach Guijalo port in Caramoan. This is the most isolated place I've ever been to, but I'm glad I went. These photos were taken on the first leg of our island-hopping on Black Saturday. The top photo is Gota Village Resort, said to be owned by the provincial governor of Camarines Sur. Gota Village Resort is closed to the public so we docked at the island across Gota, called Malindog. 


Our first island was a 30-meter stretch of fine white sand---a rock by the shore, limestone cliffs and foliage grace our slice of paradise. I have no idea how many islands are there in the Caramoan peninsula but our boatman said there are 10 must-see islets---except that a few of them are closed to the public. These islets are unexploited and pristine. I hope they would remain that way.

The Rainier Tower along Fifth Avenue in Seattle--a 40-story skyscraper with an unusual design. It has a 121-foot (11-story) vertical base that tapers towards ground level, like an inverted pyramid.
