It’s been said that this colorful dessert truly captures the “east-meets-west” culture of Filipinos. The ingredients of Halo-halo, our traditional summer cooler, come from a wide variety of influences---leche flan from the Spanish, garbanzos from the Indian, red mung beans from the Chinese, and the shaved ice was introduced by the Americans.
Halo-halo, from Tagalog word halo, “mix-mix” is a mixture of shaved ice, milk and sugar made flavorful by a variety of fruits and beans caramelized in sugar, fresh fruits and topped with leche flan, purple yam or ice cream. Other ingredients may include fresh jackfruit, nata de coco, pinipig, sugar palm fruit, sweet corn kernels, gelatin, macapuno, sweetened bananas, kiwifruit, avocado, sago, and ripe mango. I even had a halo-halo once with mandarin orange.

Luckily we now have a lot of Pinoy resto in Southern California serving "halo-halo" ala Pinas. When my son was growing up he used to call it just "halo" LOL. It is one of his favorite dessert.
Hello Miranda !
It is very big !
Miamiam...
Thank you for the recipe !
And pretty reminders of history...
It's not very often that I have halo-halo, mostly because of the evaporated milk that sometimes upsets my stomach.:D But when I crave for halo-halo, I go to Razon's. Sana matikman ng son mo ang halo-halo sa Razon's...super sarap!:D
Thanks for visiting, bertn.
Yummmmmm
Halo-Halo
Ako din - lactose intolerant - so I get an upset stomach after taking milk products.
But I love halo2 ...
So I always have LACTEEZE (lactose enzyme) handy . I pop two tablets - and then just jump in like a kid - basta halo2 , bahala na si Batman ..
dagul
Once we tried freshly squeezed gata in exchange for evaporated milk and it was simply divine! We just had to squeeze the coconut ourselves though to make sure it's clean.
wow that's something learned! didn't realize that ha, halo-halo talaga! nice!
halo-halo definitely hits the spot when it comes to colorful food! :D
masarap talaga to. siksik na siksik. pero ok na ok din talaga ang razons halo halo kahit konting laman lang.
oo nga, dong...siguro dahil mas concetrated ang flavor. tsaka i don't like ube halaya (or any purple food for that matter) in halo-halo. razon's halo-halo has no halaya.:D
thanks for visiting, munchkin mommy.
thanks, ces.:D
oy, that sounds delicious, bernadette! i love kakang-gata...it's tastier than milk nga. I hope compatible sila ng mga alaga ko sa tyan (hahaha).
i don't know if i'm lactose intolerant, dagul. i eat other milk products and i'm ok. i guess when the evap milk is not fresh, that's where my problem starts.:D
