Chimichanga Veracruz
I was expecting Mexican dancers when we entered the restaurant, or a telenovella burning up a TV screen. Instead, we were serenaded by Mexican love songs, and that made me more hungry.
I had Chimichanga Veracruz from the seafood menu. It's a flour tortilla filled with crab, prawn, baby shrimp and vegetables, deep-fried and served with sour cream and guacamole. And of course, there's Mexican rice on the side. That did it for me. The chimichanga tasted great, too...loved the seafood and rich cheese flavors!
I could barely move after I demolished my chimachanga!:P

Lasang Pinoy: crusty tacos

A taco lover will tell you that desiring a taco is comparable to an infant's need for milk, a smoker's craving for nicotine, or a shopaholic's hunger for shopping. You've got to have it---now! A confused taco lover may seek medical help, and any reputable doctor would tell her/him, with scientific certainty, that we are all programmed for tacos. From birth to the grave.
Fear not, a certified taco lover is not required to eat tacos everyday, only that he/she holds that the taco is the greatest of foods. S is protesting, asking where does this leave pizza? I don't have a response to that. I am focused on tacos.
May you never go taco-less.

Lasang Pinoy : I saw the FOOD sign!

I saw this sign from afar as S and I were debating what to eat for dinner. The colors are attractive enough to catch the eye. But instead of walking towards Tia Maria, I tried to walk to the opposite direction. S, on the other hand, moved towards the restaurant with purposeful steps. Here we go again, I thought. After swearing she wouldn't eat pork ever again about 2 weeks ago, I predicted she wouldn't last a month. And true enough, S ordered her favorite grilled Pork Spare Ribs served on a bed of Mexican rice. Well, I helped with her effort to cut down on pork by eating half of the spare ribs.:P

Chicken Quesadillas

The Texas Quesadilla was grilled chicken and cheese wrapped in toasted tortillas, with sour cream and salsa on the side. A plate of chicken quesadilla was supposedly just an appetizer. But paired with a small plate of Cobb Salad, I was too full to order anything else.
A quesadilla is a Mexican snack food made of toasted tortilla with melted cheese inside. But in addition to cheese, you can put practically anything in a quesadilla. Quesadilla is a Spanish word that literally means "little cheesy thing".

Say cheese!
For days, I have been hankering for caloricious cheese fritters. I snacked on cheese sticks and slices of Cheddar cheese a few times this week but I still couldn't get crunchy cheese fritters out of my mind. What can I say, cheese is one of my comfort foods. Finally, I had the pleasure of indulging my craving last night. Jesse James Sampler at Texas Roadhouse Grill---a perfect combination of wild cheese fritters, chicken tenders, spicy buffalo wings and slices of fresh cucumber served with 3 choices of sauces. The dips--- BBQ sauce, Cajun horseradish sauce and honey mustard, are a complement to this zesty appetizer. Great with a bottle of San Mig Light.

Delicioso Fajita

But no expletives, in Spanish or in vernacular, were uttered when this hot platter of beef and chicken fajitas was served at Texas Roadhouse in Bonifacio High Street...just an expectant, at last!
The fajita was concocted by Mexican ranch workers living near the Texas-Mexico border in the late 1930's. The meat is cooked with onions and bell peppers in an iron skillet and served with condiments on the side like sour cream, salsa, guacamole, cheese, pico de gallo and tomatoes, and rolled up in a soft flour tortilla. It's truly a Tex-Mex food, a blending of Texas cowboy and Mexican panchero foods. I had my first fajita in an authentic Mexican cantina in Lewisville, Texas, a quaint version of our turo-turo and a perfect set for vintage Clint Eastwood western.

Lasang Pinoy, Sundays: crunchy

My favorite salsa fresca with "crunchy" tortilla and brown rice chips. Great while watching TV...good thing I was munching this during the opening of the Beijing Olympics. It comforted me somehow even when I was so disappointed not seeing Team Philippines [and President Arroyo] enter the iconic Bird's Nest. I thought I blinked and missed the Philippine contingent, only to learn this morning that the Philippine delegate was indeed virtually ignored by the Chinese television, both English and Mandarin channels. What can we do---boycott siomai and siopao?
More "crunchy" treats at Spices.
