Carnitas Burrito

"I thought I was eating a candy bar, but it turned out to be a yummy burrito. I was both disappointed and appointed at the same time." ~ Jarod Kintz

Finally, I was able to take a photo of the burrito at Army Navy Burrito + Burgers before I demolished it.  It won't be photogenic anymore after the foil wrap has been opened, especially after I have chomped down on it.   I also got a dollop of sour cream to go with my Carnitas Burrito. *burp*

Grilled Chicken and Cobb Salad

@ mirandablue
Cobb Salad
Rain and flood always bring Metro Manila traffic to a crawl.  U and I were stuck in a late afternoon traffic during a heavy downpour last week.  Good thing we managed to take the service road to Market! Market! and drove straight to Bonifacio High Street.  I missed dining at Texas Roadhouse Grill in High Street---it's been months since I've been here. U and I shared the Cobb Salad, and I got the Grilled Chicken with mushrooms, with grilled shrimps as an extra topping.  I love the mushroomy, lemony, buttery flavors of this dish.  The sweet, scrumptious shrimps added excitement to the palate.

Parmesan-crusted Fish

@ mirandablue
I love this light and delectable fish dish at Texas Roadhouse Grill---it's Parmesan-crusted fish with Texas rice and steamed vegetables, served on a bed of Alfredo sauce.

Fried Ice Cream

If you're bored with the usual ice cream, try something different like fried ice cream. I got this scoop of heaven at Agave-Mexican Cantina--it's vanilla ice cream with a crunchy coating, served with whipped cream topped with cherry and drizzled with dark chocolate. Delightful!

Red season [Ruby Tuesday]

Red was all over the place last weekend. Spotted this tree adorned with red lanterns and red packets (or "ang-pau") and an over-sized heart hanging over at the Eastwood Mall. The red packets are passed out during the CNY celebrations, containing cash in even numbers.

Crisp and warm red tortillas at Agave-Mexican Cantina, our appetizer on Sunday dinner. They won't let you forget it's Valentine's Day.:p

Chimichanga Veracruz

After walking around the University of Washington campus, Lake Washington ship canal and gardens, I was so hungry I had a rice craving. Che wanted to bring me to a famous Vietnamese restaurant at the University District but it was already closed when we get there. We checked out a few Japanese restaurants nearby but she wasn't sure if they were any good. So we ended up in Don Eduardo's Mexican resto.

I was expecting Mexican dancers when we entered the restaurant, or a telenovella burning up a TV screen. Instead, we were serenaded by Mexican love songs, and that made me more hungry.

I had Chimichanga Veracruz from the seafood menu. It's a flour tortilla filled with crab, prawn, baby shrimp and vegetables, deep-fried and served with sour cream and guacamole. And of course, there's Mexican rice on the side. That did it for me. The chimichanga tasted great, too...loved the seafood and rich cheese flavors!

I could barely move after I demolished my chimachanga!:P

Lasang Pinoy: crusty tacos

Taco-craving is contagious. Look at these crusty beef tacos with salsa, onions, guacamole, cilantro and cheese, spiked with hot and spicy sauce, and you'd feel feverish. Then say the word "taco" to a friend and you'd find yourselves rushing to the nearest Tex-Mex like there's no tomorrow.

A taco lover will tell you that desiring a taco is comparable to an infant's need for milk, a smoker's craving for nicotine, or a shopaholic's hunger for shopping. You've got to have it---now! A confused taco lover may seek medical help, and any reputable doctor would tell her/him, with scientific certainty, that we are all programmed for tacos. From birth to the grave.

Fear not, a certified taco lover is not required to eat tacos everyday, only that he/she holds that the taco is the greatest of foods. S is protesting, asking where does this leave pizza? I don't have a response to that. I am focused on tacos.

May you never go taco-less.

Lasang Pinoy : I saw the FOOD sign!

I saw this sign from afar as S and I were debating what to eat for dinner. The colors are attractive enough to catch the eye. But instead of walking towards Tia Maria, I tried to walk to the opposite direction. S, on the other hand, moved towards the restaurant with purposeful steps. Here we go again, I thought. After swearing she wouldn't eat pork ever again about 2 weeks ago, I predicted she wouldn't last a month. And true enough, S ordered her favorite grilled Pork Spare Ribs served on a bed of Mexican rice. Well, I helped with her effort to cut down on pork by eating half of the spare ribs.:P

Chicken Quesadillas

If you haven't noticed it yet, I love Tex-Mex! My craving for Tex-Mex doesn't seem to let up. I can live on burritos, chimichanga, fajitas, and yes, quesadillas. When the bartender, Carlos, told us about their new Texas Quesadillas, I knew I wanted to try it.

The Texas Quesadilla was grilled chicken and cheese wrapped in toasted tortillas, with sour cream and salsa on the side. A plate of chicken quesadilla was supposedly just an appetizer. But paired with a small plate of Cobb Salad, I was too full to order anything else.

A quesadilla is a Mexican snack food made of toasted tortilla with melted cheese inside. But in addition to cheese, you can put practically anything in a quesadilla. Quesadilla is a Spanish word that literally means "little cheesy thing".

Say cheese!

a plate of Jesse James sampler

For days, I have been hankering for caloricious cheese fritters. I snacked on cheese sticks and slices of Cheddar cheese a few times this week but I still couldn't get crunchy cheese fritters out of my mind. What can I say, cheese is one of my comfort foods. Finally, I had the pleasure of indulging my craving last night. Jesse James Sampler at Texas Roadhouse Grill---a perfect combination of wild cheese fritters, chicken tenders, spicy buffalo wings and slices of fresh cucumber served with 3 choices of sauces. The dips--- BBQ sauce, Cajun horseradish sauce and honey mustard, are a complement to this zesty appetizer. Great with a bottle of San Mig Light.

Delicioso Fajita

Oh-la-la, fajitas con salsa de tomate! A flashback from my college Spanish class---our Portuguese teacher taught us how to order food in Spanish. But that's as far as my Spanish goes, what's left are mostly cuss words I picked up from my relatives and at my grandmother's mahjong table.

But no expletives, in Spanish or in vernacular, were uttered when this hot platter of beef and chicken fajitas was served at Texas Roadhouse in Bonifacio High Street...just an expectant, at last!

The fajita was concocted by Mexican ranch workers living near the Texas-Mexico border in the late 1930's. The meat is cooked with onions and bell peppers in an iron skillet and served with condiments on the side like sour cream, salsa, guacamole, cheese, pico de gallo and tomatoes, and rolled up in a soft flour tortilla. It's truly a Tex-Mex food, a blending of Texas cowboy and Mexican panchero foods. I had my first fajita in an authentic Mexican cantina in Lewisville, Texas, a quaint version of our turo-turo and a perfect set for vintage Clint Eastwood western.

Food Friday: it's a wrap!

When it comes to chicken, the citrus-marinated, flame-grilled chicken at El Pollo Loco is in my top 3 list. The flavor of their chicken is deliciously different, and it's roasted---a healthy alternative from the usual breaded, deep-fried chicken we get from fast-food chains. The chicken is served with warm tortillas and fresh salsa; and I usually order side dishes of corn cobbettes and coleslaw and wrap them all together.

There's an El Pollo Loco at SM Megamall (Building A) and another branch at the Mall of Asia.

Lasang Pinoy, Sundays: crunchy

I have been a bit under the weather for the past few days, but I don't want to miss posting these yummy treats. Above is the "crunchy" Creole Fish 'n Chips with Cajun sauce, sidings are honey-mustard and herb-mayo dressing. I didn't cook this one...I had it for dinner last week at Cajun Red Rock in Megamall.

My favorite salsa fresca with "crunchy" tortilla and brown rice chips. Great while watching TV...good thing I was munching this during the opening of the Beijing Olympics. It comforted me somehow even when I was so disappointed not seeing Team Philippines [and President Arroyo] enter the iconic Bird's Nest. I thought I blinked and missed the Philippine contingent, only to learn this morning that the Philippine delegate was indeed virtually ignored by the Chinese television, both English and Mandarin channels. What can we do---boycott siomai and siopao?
