A birthday celebration in the Philippines is a mixture of influences from the East and West. We probably got the customary serving of noodles, a symbol of long life, from our Chinese ancestors. While the colonizers, such as the Spanish and the Americans, left the legacy of birthday cakes, balloons, clowns and gift-giving. It is also a Filipino tradition to hear mass on one's birthday, however, the dictates of other religions have converted others not to celebrate birthdays. But the get-together with family and friends, be it simple or grand, makes birthdays one of the most important celebrations each year.

ReplyDelete1) Just recently. We went to a very close friend of mine's kid.
ReplyDelete2) We don't have any, just a cake and a dinner.
Same in Singapore... I like to think of it as having the best of both worlds, starting the day with longevity noodles from Mom and ending with party, cake and gifts in the evening ;-)
ReplyDeleteThat looks like a fun party.
ReplyDeleteIt has been years since the last time I attended a child's birthday party.
When I was growing up it was a party with my friends and there was always cake, balloon and presents.

ReplyDelete1. Yung post ko ang last na kiddie party that I attended.
2. Our tradition is to hear mass.

With nine brothers and sisters and in-laws living nearby, we attend many kiddie parties each year.
ReplyDeleteThe traditions vary. There is always cake and ice-cream, of course, but after that, the menu depends on the location. There are the pizza parties where games are included, parties around the pool with barbacue, etc., etc. We've had clowns, we've had big bounching tents, magicians, makeup artists, everyone always trying to do something different than the last.
it's probably because i'm single that i don't get invited to kiddie parties, except for my god-children and relatives.
ReplyDeletethe last kiddie party i attended was in late November--where the photos in this post were taken.
we don't have family traditions. but when we were kids, during our birthdays, my mom cooked ginataan/bilo-bilo (a sweet stew of root crops and fruits cooked in coconut cream) in a huge cast-iron pot for the kids in the whole neighborhood. there were also puto (steamed rice cake) and soda.
The last time I attended a kiddie party was in December..
ReplyDeleteWe have cake, sing, and open presents!
1. I have not attended a kiddie party in a very long time.
ReplyDeleteMaybe I'll get to go to one next monght.
2. We don't really have a tradition but one I want to start is celebrating the birthday person all week, by doing many little things!
Aloha.
I love children's parties and since I work with a lot of kids (and have so many kid friends) I get to attend A LOT of their parties!
ReplyDeleteNormally, we go out and eat out. But the best part is when they ask me what I want and I go crazy shopping with them for MY gifts! Of course, this rotates to the others and we do the same for everyone! I think this is better than buying and wrapping something for someone. ;-)
I attended two children's b-day parties on the same day as our wedding anniversary, which is in Sept. The children's parties were at Little Caesars and the young and older enjoyed pizza and bowling.
ReplyDeleteI have 27 grandchildren and 3 greats. One party was for a grand and one for a great.
