Hard-to-find [Photo Hunt]

@ mirandablue
Have you ever found yourself in a reflective, nostalgic mood and longing to hear the scratchy voice of Billie Holiday?  The scratchy sound of a 78 rpm vinyl record takes me back to different places in my childhood---at my grandmother's kitchen where she smoked her unfiltered Kool's and sang with Ella Fitzgerald; to my aunts' slumber parties where "forbidden" music was played on a 1930's Victrola...from Janis Joplin, Joan Baez to Bob Dylan.  On lazy afternoons, my mother listened to  Timi Yuro or Perry Como's For The Good Times from a turntable.  I miss the surface noise of vinyl and catch the warm subtleties of the human voice.

Vinyl records and Victrolas are hard-to-find nowadays except from a few quirky thrift shops in Cubao.  Even this vintage-looking jukebox at a diner is using CDs.

  1. When language has to stop, music continues, taking over and beyond.

    Please have a good Saturday.

  2. My mother still has a record player and quite a collection. I had some wonderful ones too that got broke on my move from NYC to Michigan. I was broken hearted.

  6. Ah there is nothing like vinyl even today. Digital recordings miss out on the little subtleties of analogue recordings.

    Have a great weekend

  11. You are quite right about the vinyl capturing warmth in the voice that a CD misses. The CDs are cold and technical.

  12. I love your take on the theme! I miss vinyl too. Still have some of my albums but no turntable anymore. My mom used to listen to Ray Charles!

Thanks for visiting mine and have a great weekend.

  15. Great photos and words. Interesting that vinyl is making a comeback because it's retro. I remember the first vinyl single I bought - Fox on the run by Sweet!! Memories love them. Enjoy your weekend.

  18. 78's & 8-tracks both hold great memories for me. Unfortunately both are hard to come by, especially media and players in decent condition.

  19. It's so nice to reminisce through these photos. The last time I saw that old "plaka" player was in gradeschool pa. Playing was Mamang Sorbetero. The jukebox naman was in December 2008, during the Kapampangan Culinary tour.
