When I see children, I couldn't help but think about their mothers. Mothers who are hard hit by the unceasing demands of the job. Who are still astounded by the ironies and absurdities of motherhood but laugh in unthinking delight at the sight, sound, touch, smell, and thought of her child.
Sometimes mothers are such a pain in the butt---well, my mother is. She can be critical, a bit controlling, but that doesn't mean she loves me less. I know that now.
Kid, make your mother proud.
My mother could make anybody feel guilty---she used to get letters of apology from people she didn't even know.

I am all the time talking about you, and bragging, to one person or another. I am like the Ancient Mariner, who had a tale in his heart he must unfold to all. I am always buttonholing somebody and saying, "Someday you must meet my mother."
