Here's my furry boyfriend who got home from the hospital yesterday after an overnight stay with other furry friends. I brought him to the clinic on Thursday night after I noticed drops of blood coming out of his nose (I was scared to death!). I applied an icepack to stop the bleeding, but there were still droplets every few minutes. At the clinic, blood tests were done to determine what's causing the nose bleed, more blood tests to check his liver and kidneys. Fritz is so gentle he didn't even protest when a dextrose was attached to his foreleg and a cotton soaked in epinephrine was stuck to his nose. He was wagging his tail when I entered the examination room, and I almost cried when I left him there. But he growled at everyone while he was being kept in a cage, the vet told me.
Fritz was released on Friday afternoon---thank God, his liver and kidneys are OK, but he has an infection, the reason why his platelet count was too low. The vet suspects Ehrlichia infection, a bacteria from ticks. Although Fritz has no ticks, my landlord's askals have ticks so they're the culprit. Fritz was prescribed a cocktail of meds that he will be taking for a month---an antibiotic (doxycycline) to kill the bacteria, vitamin K1 (for blood coagulation), multi-vitamins and a supplement for anemia. There goes my weekend shopping budget...oh well, I'm just glad he's home and getting better.

Wawa naman, good thing he is better :)
ReplyDeleteBy the way, they are not called "askals" anymore, they are called "Aspen" for Asong Pinoy :)
Get well soon! I;ve just adopted a Jack Russell but she's having this skin flaking prob. I have to wait for this weekend to be over before I can bring hher to a vet. So I can imagine your anxieity.
ReplyDeleteOh is he sweet! So glad to hear all is OK...or at least under control. Our little pooch is still going through tests for Cushings syndrome. Very distressing to watch her be distressed. Be glad you're only set back your weekend shopping trip...they're definitely worth it though!
ReplyDeleteAng cute ng nose!!! =)parang ang sarap yakapin ng doggie!
ReplyDeleteMy PH entries are here and here. Hope you can hop by if you have the time. Thanks!
i hope he will be alright
ReplyDeleteOf course, the perfect photo for the theme! This theme is made for you as well as Criz Lai :) Hope Fritz is better now, kawawa naman pag may ticks....naku! ENjoy the weekend!
ReplyDeleteWhat a good guy to put up with all of that. He looks like he's got a super disposition. It's appropriate that today's theme is Furry after all he's been through this week.
ReplyDeleteIf you enjoy photo memes, I invite you to come check out Sunday Scenery.
I hope he'll be alright. My Max had distemper when she was younger and she received a cocktail of injections every single day for three months, plus assorted meds that we mixed in her food. She had to be spoon-fed, too, because she was very weak. Thankfully, she survived - she's also the subject of my PH entry this week :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful boy. I hope he will be completely well soon.
ReplyDeleteOoooooo, thats a cute, furry litle one, yes :) Say hello to your boyfriend from me - and have a nice weekend, both of you :)
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry you had such a scare with Fritz's health, but happy to hear you will recover. He is beautiful, and furry, and I am sure you are glad to have him again.

Beautiful, beautiful dog!
ReplyDeleteI really understand your situation, Luna! Here are my home-made remedies or maintenance stuff that works as far as my personal experiences are concerned---garlic cloves (2-3 times a day for 3 days---one a month) and/or VCO as supplementary diet. The garlic when in the blood becomes a sort of disinfectant and not a favorite of ticks and fleas.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad he's fine and is discharged :)
ReplyDeleteReal handsome boy!
Darling doggie. So glad your furry companion got the care he needs. Hope he recovers soon! ThanX for stopping by.
ReplyDeletelucky lucky dog! i also love dogs but i dont have one right now. lawstude has a dog like that.
ReplyDeletehello, bernadette! thanks for idea! i'll definitely try cloves of garlic and VCO. namumulubi ako sa mahal ng mga meds! Fritz puked after taking sangobion, a blood vitamins...it's 16 pesos each and he'll be taking it for a month. I called the vet and she advised to replace it with ferrous sulfate. bakit kasi branded pa ang nasa prescription pwede naman pala yong inexpensive ferrous sulfate. hayyy!
ReplyDeletehi, dong! i'd like to think that it's me who is lucky because i have Fritz. i'm sure every dog parent knows the feeling.:D
ReplyDeleteyes, i saw lawstude's dog...he's also cute.
medicine is business too, Luna. My brod-in-law is a doctor and he intimates that they (doctors) are tied down to some form of ethics and one of them is not to push for less expensive organic or alternative meds.
